Labels and Packaging for Vials and Pens

Buyer's guide · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

Good labels and packaging protect the product, help patients use it correctly and make a brand look professional. They also have to carry the information the law requires.

Label materials

  • Synthetic labels resist moisture, refrigeration and handling better than paper.
  • Adhesives rated for cold storage, so labels don't lift in the refrigerator.
  • Sizes that wrap a vial or pen without covering the inspection window.

What goes on the label

Required label content depends on who is dispensing and the product type, set by state pharmacy rules and federal requirements for pharmacies and manufacturers. Your pharmacy partner or regulatory counsel defines the required elements; we produce labels to that specification.

Secondary packaging

  • Folding cartons sized to a vial, pen or kit.
  • Inserts and trays to hold components in place.
  • Branded outer packaging for patient-facing programs.

Custom branding

Custom printing has minimum order quantities and proof cycles. Allow time for artwork approval, and order enough to cover several months.

Artwork and proofing

Custom labels and cartons go through artwork, proofing and approval before printing. Build in time for at least one round of changes, and have whoever is responsible for label content review the final proof before you approve it.

Questions to ask your supplier

  • Which materials and adhesives are available for cold storage?
  • What are the minimum order quantities and lead times?
  • Can variable data, such as lot and expiration, be printed or added later?
  • Are cartons and inserts sized for our vials or pens?

Inventory planning

Printed packaging is often cheaper per unit at higher quantities, but packaging that becomes outdated when label content changes is wasted. Balance volume pricing against how often your content is likely to change.

Frequently asked questions

What information has to be on a vial label?

It depends on the product and who's dispensing it. State pharmacy rules and federal requirements apply, and your pharmacy or counsel should confirm the required elements.

Do labels hold up in the refrigerator?

Choose synthetic materials with cold-rated adhesive. We'll recommend the right stock for your storage conditions.

What are the minimums for custom packaging?

Minimums depend on the item and print method, and we confirm them on the quote.

Can lot numbers be printed later?

Many programs print static content in advance and add lot and expiration details at the time of filling. Ask about the options for your label stock.
