Sterile empty vials look simple, but there are real differences in glass, sterilization, neck size and closures, and getting them wrong can cause problems on the filling line or in storage.
This guide explains the specifications that matter when you're ordering vials for pharmacy, clinic or brand programs, including peptide programs.
Glass type
Most injectable-grade vials use Type I borosilicate glass, which is chemically resistant and handles temperature changes well. Ask your supplier to confirm the glass type and that the vials meet the relevant USP glass container standards.
Sizes and neck finish
- Common sizes are 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 mL. Choose a fill volume with room for headspace.
- Neck finish is typically 13 mm or 20 mm. Stoppers and seals must match the neck size exactly.
- Clear vials make visual inspection easy; amber vials protect light-sensitive contents.
Sterile and ready to use
Sterile, depyrogenated vials arrive sealed and ready to fill, saving washing and sterilization steps. Confirm how they were sterilized, the expiration date and how they're packaged (trays, sleeves or cases). Pre-assembled vials come with stoppers and seals already fitted.
Closures
Butyl rubber stoppers are standard. Flip-off aluminum seals come in multiple colors, which many practices use to tell products or strengths apart at a glance. You'll need a crimper sized to your seal; see our guide to vial seals and crimpers.
Questions to ask your supplier
- What's the glass type, and which standards does it meet?
- How were the vials sterilized and depyrogenated, and when do they expire?
- What's the neck finish?
- Are pre-assembled vials (stopper and seal fitted) available?
- What's the case count and lead time?
Ordering tips
Order by the case, and confirm units per case and lead time. Keep one size and color standard across products where you can, which simplifies inventory and reduces mistakes.
Frequently asked questions
What glass should injectable vials be?
Type I borosilicate glass is the standard for injectables because it's chemically resistant and stable.
Do stoppers and seals need to match the vial?
Yes. Match the neck finish, commonly 13 mm or 20 mm, for both the stopper and the seal.
Do you offer custom colors or volume pricing?
Yes. Seal colors and case pricing are confirmed on every quote, and volume orders get tiered pricing.
Are amber vials necessary?
For light-sensitive contents, yes. Otherwise, clear vials make visual inspection easier.
