Laser and IPL Systems: Buying New or Certified Pre-Owned

Buyer's guide · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

Lasers and intense pulsed light platforms are often a med spa's biggest equipment investment. The right choice depends on your treatment menu, your clients' skin types, who will operate the device and your budget, including whether a certified pre-owned unit makes sense.

This guide walks through the main decisions.

Start with your treatment menu

List the services you plan to offer and how often, then match platforms to that list. Some practices start with a single-application device, such as hair removal, and add more later. Others choose a multi-application workstation with interchangeable handpieces. Consider the range of skin types your clients have, since some wavelengths suit certain skin types better than others.

New vs certified pre-owned

  • New: full manufacturer warranty, the latest software, training included and predictable service, at the highest price.
  • Certified pre-owned: a lower upfront cost. Ask who refurbished it, the shot or pulse count, which parts were replaced, whether it's eligible for a manufacturer service contract and whether software licenses transfer to you.
  • Avoid units without clear service history or that can't be serviced by the manufacturer or an authorized provider.

Laser safety

Medical lasers used in aesthetics are commonly high-power devices that require safety controls. Practices typically follow ANSI Z136.3 for safe use of lasers in health care: eye protection rated for the wavelength, controlled treatment rooms, warning signage and a designated laser safety officer. Some states regulate who may operate lasers and require registration of the device.

Service and consumables

Ask about consumables such as filters, tips, flashlamps and cooling components, how often they need replacing, service contract pricing, and response times. Downtime on a laser is expensive.

Frequently asked questions

Is a certified pre-owned laser a good idea?

It can be, if the refurbisher is reputable, the service history is documented and the unit can be serviced under contract. Ask for the pulse count and a list of replaced parts.

What safety equipment do I need for a laser room?

Wavelength-rated eyewear for everyone in the room, warning signage, controlled access and a laser safety program. Many practices follow ANSI Z136.3.
